News from the capitol

Governor Brown signed AB 1530 by Assemblymember Gonzalez Fletcher into law. The bill requires the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to update the California Urban Forestry Act to reflect its current funding levels, establish local or regional targets for urban tree canopy and provide more focus on the maintenance of urban forests. The bill specifies the benefits integrated into projects should include expanded urban forest canopy, community greening, carbon sequestration and reduced energy consumption, among others.

The bill also authorizes CAL FIRE to provide funding for improved urban forest maintenance, and projects that respond to events that impact urban forest health, and planning and technical assistance for eligible applicants assisting disadvantaged communities. For more information, a summary of the bill can be found here.

The structure, function and value of urban forests in California communities

A new article on California’s urban forest has recently been published. Some highlights from the study found:

  • California’s urban forests have relatively low stocking levels.
  • Stocking was higher in coastal cities than inland cities.
  • The population was diverse, except for oaks (22%, but only 6.4% of basal area).
  • The annual value of ecoservices per tree varied fivefold among climate zones.

Tree Selection for the 21st Century

Speaker: Greg McPherson, PhD, Research Forester, US Forest Service

Urban forestry can be an elegant strategy for increasing tree canopy, managing stormwater and capturing carbon. Selecting trees to provide these services requires science-based information on the relative performance of different species over time within the context of a changing climate. This presentation combines new research findings on climate-ready tree evaluation, urban tree biometrics and surface water storage capacity to illustrate differences among species.

Sacred Trees

Speaker: Julia E Jones, ISA Municipal Specialist, TIC Interfaith Minister
In the spirit of the holiday season, this presentation will explore the numinous world of sacred trees. Julia Jones will guide us on  a virtual world tour to learn about the mystical meaning of trees as found in many faiths. The virtual tour will then return home to the Sacramento Valley where attendees will learn about local sacred trees. Participants are invited to bring pictures and stories of notable trees from their own lives and travels. This presentation is partly intended to broaden our understanding of diversity so as to more successfully engage the public.
