Governor Brown signed AB 1530 by Assemblymember Gonzalez Fletcher into law. The bill requires the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to update the California Urban Forestry Act to reflect its current funding levels, establish local or regional targets for urban tree canopy and provide more focus on the maintenance of urban forests. The bill specifies the benefits integrated into projects should include expanded urban forest canopy, community greening, carbon sequestration and reduced energy consumption, among others.
The bill also authorizes CAL FIRE to provide funding for improved urban forest maintenance, and projects that respond to events that impact urban forest health, and planning and technical assistance for eligible applicants assisting disadvantaged communities. For more information, a summary of the bill can be found here.
